Victor Martinez was named the American League's Player of the Month for August, the first such honor for the 12-year veteran and five-time All-Star.

Detroit's designated hitter tied for the Major League lead in hits with 41 in the month, and toted a .350 batting average in 31 games. Martinez slugged at a .547 clip in the month, hitting six homers and driving in 30 runs.

Martinez, 35, tallied 14 multihit games and was third in the AL in on-base percentage (.442) thanks to 19 walks.

Martinez -- whose .332 season average was second only to the Astros' Jose Altuve in the Majors entering Wednesday -- is the first Detroit player to win the award in 2014. The last Tiger to win it was two-time reigning AL MVP Miguel Cabrera, who earned the distinction last August.

Houston's Chris Carter, Kansas City's Alex Gordon, Chicago's Jose Abreu and Minnesota's Trevor Plouffe also received votes.
