DETROIT -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia lost his second challenge in three tries, when umpires ruled Sunday that an initial call on a pickoff play stood, and Torii Hunter was safe.
With two outs in the eighth inning and the Tigers ahead, 2-1, Joe Smith stepped off the rubber and Hunter stumbled while getting back to the base, but was nonetheless ruled safe after a late reaction from the Angels' reliever.
Angels first baseman Albert Pujols believed his right foot blocked Hunter from getting the baserunner's hand on the base, however, and asked Scioscia to use his challenge on the play. Upon review, umpires ruled that there wasn't enough conclusive evidence to overturn the call.
Hunter then stole second, but he was stranded there when Nick Castellanos struck out to end the inning.
