LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Tigers' latest tryout with baseball's instant replay system resulted in two reviews, both of which upheld the original calls. One of them wasn't a surprise, the other seemingly was.

Both plays happened in the fifth inning, Marlins manager Mike Redmond challenged a safe call on Austin Jackson stealing second base. Replay upheld the call, which eventually led to Detroit's first run.

Later that inning, it was Tiger manager Brad Ausmus' turn to challenge, questioning the out call at first on an inning-ending double play. Though replay suggested Andrew Romine might have beat the throw at first, the ruling was upheld.

Ausmus immediately came out to challenge the call, which seemingly suggested he was confident about getting it overturned. But as Ausmus explained later, he was simply trying to get in his challenge before the defenders left the field.

"You don't want the defense clearing," Ausmus said. "That's why I was a little emphatic. I didn't want the defense, especially the pitcher, to be in the dugout. That's something they're trying to avoid. You have to get out there relatively quickly."
