Tigers acquire Andrew Romine from Angels for Jose Alvarez


The Detroit Tigers today announced that the club has acquired shortstop Andrew Romine from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for lefthanded pitcher Jose Alvarez.  

Romine, 28, appeared in a career-high 47 games for the Los Angeles Angels in 2013 and batted .259 (28x108) with nine runs scored, three doubles, and 10 RBI. He saw action at second base (four games), third base (24 games) and shortstop (17 games,) compiling a .967 fielding percentage (121 TC/4E) on the season. The Winter Haven, Fl. native batted .287 (104x363) in 89 games with Triple A Salt Lake City in 2013.

Originally drafted by the Angels in the fifth round of the June 2007 draft, Romine made his major league debut with the club in 2010. In parts of four seasons at the major league level, he has batted .250 (38x152) with 13 runs scored, three doubles and 11 RBI in 74 career games.

Romine, 6-1, 190 lbs. is the son of former Boston Red Sox outfielder, Kevin Romine.

Alvarez, 24, appeared in 14 games with the Tigers last season as he spent the majority of 2013 with Triple A Toledo. He compiled a 1-5 record, 5.82 ERA (38.2IP/25ER), and 31 strikeouts in 14 appearances (six starts) with Detroit in 2013. During his time with Toledo, he posted an 8-6 record, 2.80 ERA (128.2IP/40ER), and 115 strikeouts in 20 starts (21 appearances) with the club. Additionally, he was named the Tigers Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
