Detroit to open 2010 at Kansas City

|
DETROIT -- The Tigers will open their 2010 season at Kansas City before their April 9 home opener against Cleveland under the Major League schedule released Tuesday.

Detroit will begin the season on the road for the second straight year, and at the Royals for the first time since 2006. The season opener will be Monday, April 5, followed by two more games with the Royals April 7-8. April 6 will be an off-day that serves as a potential makeup date in case the opener is rained out.

From there, the Tigers return home for their own home opener on Friday, April 9, against the Indians, starting a six-game homestand that will also bring the Royals to town.

Highlights of next year's schedule include a nine-game homestand that will welcome the Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox to Comerica Park May 10-18, and a nine-game homestand against the White Sox, Angels and Rays Aug. 3-11.

The Tigers' Interleague schedule, which in past years has pitted primarily division against division, features a mix of teams from all three National League divisions to face the Tigers. They'll visit Dodger Stadium on May 21-23 as part of a three-city West Coast trip before the Pirates, Nationals and Diamondbacks come to Detroit for a nine-game home stretch June 11-20. The Interleague stretch ends with a trip to visit the Mets at their new home, Citi Field, June 22-24 before going to Atlanta for three games against the Braves June 25-27.

While the schedule features a fair amount of road tilts for the Tigers in April and September, they'll be at home for long stretches during the summer. From a weather standpoint, that could work to their advantage.

The Tigers will close out the season on the road at Cleveland for three games on Sept. 27-29, followed by a four-game set at Baltimore Sept. 30-Oct. 3.
