Tigers agree to terms with Prince Fielder

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms with first baseman Prince Fielder on a nine-year contract through the 2020 season.

Fielder batted .299 (170x569) with 95 runs scored, 36 doubles, a triple, 38 home runs and 120 RBI in 162 games with the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2011 season. He finished second in the National League with 38 home runs, 120 RBI, 107 walks and a .415 on-base percentage, while he finished third with 322 total bases and a .566 slugging percentage, tied for third with 75 extra-base hits and tied for ninth with 36 doubles. Fielder finished third in the National League’s Most Valuable Player voting with Milwaukee in 2011.

“Prince Fielder is one of the premier offensive players in the game of baseball and we are extremely excited to add an all-star caliber player like him to our lineup,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “The addition of Prince is a testament to the organization’s continued commitment to fielding a championship club.”

In seven seasons at the major league level with the Brewers (2005-11), Fielder hit .282 (996x3527) with 571 runs scored, 200 doubles, nine triples, 230 home runs, 656 RBI, a .390 on-base percentage and .540 slugging percentage in 998 games.

Since the start of the 2006 season, Fielder is third among all major league players with 228 home runs, while he is fifth with 1,877 total bases and sixth with 646 RBI and 433 extra-base hits. He batted .282 (979x3468) with 569 runs scored, 196 doubles, nine triples, a .391 on-base percentage and .541 slugging percentage in 959 games during the six-season stretch.

Selected by Milwaukee with the seventh selection in the first round of the 2002 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Fielder has been selected to the National League’s all-star squad three times during his career (2007, 2009 and 2011) and he has won two Silver Slugger Awards (2007 and 2011).

Fielder, his wife, Chanel and sons, Jadyn (8/17/04) and Haven (3/21/06) reside in Florida during the off-season.
