Clevlen and catcher Mike Rabelo were optioned to Triple-A Toledo. Non-roster players Maybin, Craig Dingman, Brent Dlugach, Joey Eischen, Mike Hessman, Kevin Hooper, Dennis Tankersley and Brandon Watson were assigned to Minor League camp. The moves were expected following the Tigers' split-squad games on Sunday.
Maybin was one of the top performers so far this spring, batting 9-for-21 with two triples, two homers and seven RBIs. However, he has just one year of experience in pro ball. He's expected to start the season at Class A Lakeland.
Clevlen's move was a promotion after he spent last season at Double-A Erie. He batted .230 in 109 games for the SeaWolves with 11 home runs, 45 RBIs and 138 strikeouts. He fared better in Detroit after a late-season callup, batting .282 with three homers and six RBIs, including a two-homer game at Tampa Bay.
Dingman and Eischen are coming off surgeries last year and are trying to regain their arm strength. Eischen is expected to open the season at Class A Lakeland.
Hooper, Hessman, Tankersley and Watson will join Clevlen and Rabelo as part of a Mud Hens roster trying to defend their back-to-back International League Governors' Cup championships.
The moves whittled Detroit's roster to 39 players with 12 days remaining before the team breaks camp and heads north.
