A veteran of 38 years in professional baseball, McClendon is in his second stint on the Tigers coaching staff... rejoined the Major League staff as hitting coach on October 21, 2016 ... Joined the Major League club after serving as the manager for Triple A Toledo in 2016...guided the Mud Hens to a 68-76 record in his one season as the team's manager ... Prior to rejoining the Tigers organization, McClendon spent two seasons as the manager of the Seattle Mariners...led the Mariners to a 163-161 record over his two seasons...the club's 87 wins during his first year in Seattle marked the seventh-best mark in club history and snapped a string of four straight losing seasons ... First joined the Tigers on October 11, 2005, after being named the Tigers bullpen coach on Jim Leyland's coaching staff -- transitioned to the club's hitting coach the following season and remained in that position for seven seasons (2007-13) ... Served as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates for five seasons (2001-05) before joining the Tigers... served as a coach for the National League squad at Major League Baseball's All-Star Game in 2003 at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field ... He began his coaching career as the Pirates roving Minor League hitting instructor in 1996...spent the next four seasons (1997-2000) as the club's Major League hitting coach ... Managed Lancaster in the California Fall League following the 1999 season, leading the club to the league's championship...served as the manager for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League following the 2000 season until he resigned from that post on November 1, one week after being named the Pirates manager ... His playing career spanned 16 seasons (1980-95) after he was selected in the eighth round of the June 1980 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the New York Mets...saw action at the Major League level with the Cincinnati Reds (1987-88), Chicago Cubs (1989-90) and Pirates (1990-94) ... Was a member of four division-winning clubs with the Cubs (1989) and Pirates (1990-92)...hit .625/.696/.938 in 11 games during his three appearances in the National League Championship Series ... Graduated from Roosevelt High School in Indiana in 1977, where he was an All-State selection in baseball...played baseball at Valparaiso University ... Participated in the 1971 Little League World Series and earned the nickname "Legendary Lloyd" after hitting five home runs in five swings and drawing five intentional walks for his Gary, IN team...as a pitcher in that same series, he fanned 12 batters in eight innings of the championship game against Tainan City, Taiwan -- was enshrined in the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum's Hall of Excellence in Williamsport, PA on August 26, 2006 ... Attended the Negro Leagues Weekend Legacy Luncheon and Keeping Kids in the Game; participated in the Jackie Robinson Day pregame ceremony, the Play Baseball Detroit clinics, the Wayne State Youth Baseball Camp, the Tigers Winter Caravan and TigerFest ... He and his wife, Ingrid, reside in Chesterton, IN during the offseason...the couple has two children, daughter Schenell and son Bo ...Bo was selected by the Tigers in the 39th round of the June 2010 draft.
